Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. She was an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as a young student. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury, and then look through their trash. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency.
